While tech has revolutionized the phone and changed the world with computers, what's been going on with eyewear?
Audio giant Bose has released a pair of seemingly stylish specs — but there's more to these sunnies than meets the eye. Bose Frames are sunglasses that have speakers in the arms and come in two styles, Alto and Rondo. They have a built-in audio augmented reality platform, allowing wearers to stream tunes, listen to podcasts, make calls, and even access your virtual assistant.
Fashionable Design
In the looks department, Bose definitely succeeds. We found the shades to be quite stylish. We appreciate that there is no noticeable branding on the exterior, and were impressed that despite holding a battery, a Bluetooth module, and speakers, the temples remain quite thin. After a few hours of wear, you likely won't notice the thicker build.
According to Bose, the Frames are scratch and shatter resistant and are 99% UVA/UVB protected. The lenses aren’t Polarized though so may not be your best bet for driving.
You have two distinct frame styles to choose from — Alto and Rondo. Both block up to 99% of UVA/UVB rays. The rectangular Alto pair is noticeably larger, with 52-millimeter lenses compared to the Rondo’s 49.5-millimeter rounded ones. Both pairs are only sold in matte black, with darkened lenses and gold-plated steel hinges. We would have liked to have seen a tortoiseshell-and-tan lens combination, and hope Bose releases more colors in the future.

How To Pick The Right Pair Of Sunglasses
The Sound
While there is something undeniably cool about listening to music on the go without having to put anything in or over your lugs, the Frames probably don’t do quite enough to replace a decent pair of headphones.
It’s not that they sound bad. In fact, it’s hard not to be impressed by the volume Bose’s micro-acoustics can produce. Problem is, everything gets a bit mushy when you push them to over 80%, and there’s next to no bass. There is less bass than I would like on some tracks, probably because providing fuller bass would have made the frames thicker.
Depending on the music source, 40% to 60% volume will be in the safe zone, where you are the only one who can hear the tracks. At that volume, you'll likely still enjoy the listening experience.
Hearing Other Sounds
Listening with Bose Frames may bother others in situations where you’re near to them. Wearing them on a plane, subway, bus or train may not be the best idea, unless you’re looking to annoy someone on purpose.
But for times when you should be hearing the world around you, Bose Frames may be your best bet for listening.
Perhaps you run, bike, walk or do other activities where you use headphones or earbuds. When you listen you may hear great music, podcasts or audiobooks. But you may be missing out on the sounds around you. Perhaps someone is trying to talk to you, or maybe there’s a car approaching. Headphones and earbuds can make you oblivious to the sounds around you.
Battery Life/Charging
Bose Frames helpfully let you know how much battery power you have when you turn them on and connect them to your phone. Bose says battery life is 3.5 hours of streaming and 12 hours of standby. Bose estimates that you'll get 3.5 hours of listening time and that the Frames will take two hours to get a full charge, so don't go into these thinking you'll get all-day battery life.
Bose Frames charge magnetically with a proprietary charge cord that works only with Bose Frames. As of now, you can’t buy an extra cord so be sure not to leave it behind when you travel. I hope Bose does begin to sell the cords separately so you’ll be able to buy a spare cord.
